Migrants: ensuring they are a benefit for European host societies

Integration however does not just happen. It is a result of many factors including migrants’ countries of origin and destination, the locality where they settle, their backgrounds, languages, education, skills and experiences. It also depends on the laws, practices, support and attitudes of the host society and a range of other factors. Integration requires a range of measures addressed at both migrants and the host society, and there is growing recognition of the different steps that need to be taken at local and national levels to promote integration. The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX) covering 31 European and North American countries is a useful tool for analysing the laws and practices relating to integration across many member states of the Council of Europe.
