As global migration has expanded, many destination countries for migrants have become increasingly hostile toward foreign-born residents, asylum-seekers and new immigrants. The global economic crisis has pushed many democratic states in Europe and North America to the political “right” resulting in more restrictive immigration policies and reduced support for effective economic and cultural integration of immigrants. While adult migrants generally face enormous difficulties and discrimination, child migrants often experience magnified challenges.
