Introducing new MIPEX results: How Canada can learn from the world. A roundtable and reception at the Metropolis ConferenceFriday, March 25, 2011 - 4:15 to 6pmCourtesy of the British Consulate General in Vancouver, you are invited to enjoy a complimentary glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres, while we discuss the MIPEX data. MIPEX, which is published by the British Council and the Migration Policy Group, is a unique, long-term data project which uses 148 policy indicators to assess how governments around the world promote the integration of migrants. The Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX, http://www.integrationindex.eu/) evaluates and compares what governments are doing in all EU Member States and several non-EU countries. It has traditionally covered six policy areas: labour market integration, family reunion, long-term residence, political participation, access to nationality, and anti-discrimination. The latest edition adds migrant education and the rights of third-country national workers.Canada was ranked third overall following Sweden and Portugal. The MIPEX tool gives policy makers a quick reference guide to assess the impact of their policy changes and get an overall impression of their country’s strengths and weaknesses.Clare Spencer-Guidera, Deputy Consul General, British Consulate-General Vancouver, will introduce the session, and Jack Jedwab, Executive Director of the Association for Canadian Studies, will present the MIPEX findings.Following observations by Baldwin Wong, Social Planner, City of Vancouver, and Myer Siemiatycki, Professor, Ryerson University, participants will be asked to reflect on the MIPEX findings by sharing their own work in the policy areas examined. Together the group will discuss:•What is most surprising about the MIPEX findings? Which findings are consistent with your work or experience, and which are not?•What can (or should) we learn from other countries? What are the Canadian best practices that should be shared? The discussion will be captured in an “outcomes report” that will be used as the basis for an interactive webinar that will take place in late May. Please note that registration is limited. For more information, please contact the roundtable organizer, Sandra Lopes, Manager, Policy and Research, Maytree at: slopes@maytree.com or 416-944-2627.
