Belgian lawmakers make ‘citizens-to-be’ face new round of questioning by police about their integration

Since the 2000 reform, researchers at the OECD and Antwerp University have found that becoming Belgian has helped immigrants become better integrated in the labour market....
But as MIPEX III went to print, Belgium’s Naturalisation Committee voted new internal guidelines. Using the “Improve Your Score” function, I assessed the prospective impact of these guidelines on immigrants’ path to Belgian citizenship. According to this assessment, the reintroduced language and integration checks are unfavourable for promoting integration. This finding will seem counter-intuitive to those who do not know how naturalisation works (or does not work) in Belgium...
